Southwest Texas LIVE! Statement of Editorial Policy

May 11, 2007
By Joe Hyde
Publisher

The manner of your speaking is full as important as the matter, for more people have ears to be tickled than understandings to judge.
--- Lord Chesterfield

Southwest Texas LIVE! has evolved through months of planning, production, and – when all else failed – trial-and-error, striving to create a pioneering climate of valued communications in an unexplored journalism niche in southwest Texas. The overwhelming response from thousands of readers and hundreds of correspondents demonstrates the importance of protecting the integrity of all the partners in this exciting venture.

In posts, blogs, unsolicited testimonials, and privately E-mailed comments, we know with absolute and substantiated certainty that those who take the time to log on, read, think about, and independently evaluate what we’ve set out to do hold this forum in high esteem. And we are more grateful for those expressions than words can express.

To hone and show our respect for that growing appreciation, we at LIVE! have put all threats to continued service and growth in our editorial crosshairs. A few “targets of opportunity” have slipped past our eyes, due in large part to the wide net we’ve cast, an at times daunting schedule, and the uncertainty that comes from not having an agreed-upon policy. We have redoubled our effort to screen comments and our own articles, and, to that end, will request certain information from everyone signing in to create posts and comments.

Each commenter may continue to use a pseudonym, if they wish, to maintain their anonymity with readers, but we will ask for the commenter’s real name, any and all pseudonyms to be used, a verifiable street address and a phone number. Participants may easily provide this information in their online User Profile available under the “Edit” tab that is visible after clicking on the “view account” link at the top right hand corner of every page on swtexaslive.com. This information will not be made public by Southwest Texas LIVE!

In addition to that opportunity for us to know our readers better, we have identified several problem areas that occasionally crop up in comments.Triggers that may get a comment zapped during our increased attention to what goes out to the world include:

  1. Unsubstantiated claims that a named or identified individual has lied, deliberately mislead, or obtained benefit from being in a position of responsibility.

  2. Profanity, graphic sexual language, and anything that promotes the use, sale or procurement of illicit drugs or other contraband.

  3. Allegations of criminal behavior, malfeasance, or misfeasance unless arrests have been made, charges have been filed by authorities, or corrective action taken to remedy the behavior.

  4. Unsubstantiated opinions about whether an individual is “good” or “bad” for the community. No invitations will be posted to secure such random opinions. The Web site will not serve as a “kangaroo court.”

  5. Flagrant “fishing expeditions” for rumor, innuendo, public perceptions, or so-called facts. In short, the cities and towns in the Southwest Texas LIVE! service area are small communities wherein collaboration, cooperation and an ethic of what’s best for all is promoted by understanding what may come from such synergy. Divisiveness for the sake of entertainment or the pursuit of personal agendas is an unfortunate tradition in some locales, and LIVE! will strive to deflate it, rather than feed it.

Editorial policies are never perfect and we expect to have dissent about decisions we will be forced to make along the path to better discourse. In light of this, we are also instituting a mechanism of reader control that provides an interactive way for participants on our Web site to police themselves.

Every comment or posting will have a “Report Abuse” link visible to members who are logged in that allows anyone to report an objectionable comment or post for review by the editorial board. We will also accept public criticisms of editorial decisions, viewable to all. When appropriate, we will respond to criticisms of our decisions to provide insight into our subjectivity. Our aim is to provide reasonable transparency into our decisions.

Those of us who write for LIVE! will continue to use our real names for articles, features, photographs, comments and posts, and invite our readers to do the same.

In reader comments and posts, we solicit ideas and concepts, and will report in similar fashion, striving for facts and varying points of view that illustrate and provoke broader thought.

Respectfully ---

Southwest Texas LIVE! Editorial Board

YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB.

YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.

Hi Del Rio LIVE, I am the

Hi Del Rio LIVE, I am the "newbe" to this forum as I posted my first one today. About the "editorial policy", I hope I didn't break the rules. I just want to get to know Del Rio and it's people before we move there. I plan on being an active member of this forum. Respect, Joi

Yes, Welcome to Del Rio and

Yes, Welcome to Del Rio and southwest Texas. I'm fairly new here myself. We moved here last August and have found SWTexasLIVE to be a great forum for not only Del Rio but the entire area.

I read in your other post the reasons why you are moving out here and I wish I had something substantial to offer like a place to rent, but I don't. All I can offer so far is a hand of friendship (I think that is what Amistad is about?) and look forward to seeing more of your postings here. Del Rio is small but growing. We don't have a lot of shopping choices here but we do have a mall, Home Depot, a Super Wal-Mart along with a nice size HEB grocery store and plenty of local owned friendly stores. When we need to do any shopping for items we can't find here, its only about a 2 1/2 hour drive to San Antonio.

SWTexasLive does interest stories on different towns and places around Del Rio. We have taken some trips to the Caves of Sonora and visited the cave drawings at the Seminole Canyon State park. Texas has a lot of state parks. Two weeks ago we took a drive out Hwy 90 west to Langtry, Sanderson, and Marathon. Just last week we took a drive up into the hill country between Del Rio and San Antonio visiting Garner State Park and then went to see the replica of Stonehenge outside of Ingram/Hunt. A very beautiful scenic drive. There is a lot to see and do around here. Lake Amistad a national park area is beautiful and only a few miles west of Del Rio on Hwy 90. I'm not going to stay in Del Rio and be grumpy like I could do. We plan to continue to take trips although the price of gas is making it harder on the pocket book lately and may slow us down but not stop us.

Again I say welcome to Del Rio. :)

You are most welcome here,

You are most welcome here, Joi Page, not only on this Web site, but here in this community when you arrive. We look forward to future posts and your comments. Welcome to Texas! We're a city of about 36,000 friendly folks and a half dozen grumps, myself included.

Hi joi page, welcome to Del

Hi joi page, welcome to Del Rio and to this forum.

Out of 762 words of

Out of 762 words of editorial wisdom & rules, all that you tell me about the safekeeping of my personal information is only 11 words: "This information will not be made public by Southwest Texas LIVE!" That is less than 2% of all the whole article (if you can call it that).....really doesn't make me want to give the info to you.

The privacy concerns are

The privacy concerns are real. However, when you are out in public, do you shroud your face and refuse to give your real name to anyone? When you write an editorial to the local newspaper, do you expect it to get published without a byline? If you were to speak in public, would you expect no one to want to know your name? I have studied and expermented with online forums since online forums were invented. I have personally considered and tested various concepts of "anonymous" and "non-anonymous" speech. I have finally decided that whether the medium is a street corner or a podium in front of hundreds of people or the Internet, the best way to conduct discourse is in person, with a real name. Understanding that some folks are still leary of revealing real names over the Internet, and to hopefully maintain a high level of participation, we still will mask the real names. However, I personally don't understand why everyone doesn't just sign their real name to anything they write. Doing so certainly increases the credibility of the comment. Joe Hyde Publisher

I wish to render my opinion

I wish to render my opinion in the matter for it is an important one.

Whether or not names are required to post in this forum is irrelevant to me personally, and although I understand both sides of the argument, the core issue remains that this forum affords us as citizens our basic right to free speech and that is what's relevant here.

I respect the privacy issue for as you said Joe “The privacy concerns are real”, I respect the opinion that if you feel strongly enough to post about a certain topic then you should be willing to identify yourself, and while both points could be argued vigorously, we absolutely positively cannot turn this into a name calling, trouble stirring, or rumor starting venue.

I am neutral on the matter of self identification when posting, what I am strongly in favor of however, is allowing the piblic to speak their mind freely on issues, concepts, and matters of substance.

Nick

Have you heard of the

Have you heard of the privacy act? It's the law!

The privacy act does not

The privacy act does not pertain to publicly made statments or public acts. This is a public web site in that the general public has access to read it. There is no law that says the owners of this site have to keep anyones secrets. There is only honor, given word and business sense. Honor is present, word was given and good business sense is to be found here. Requests for privacy will be honored bottom line. Mine has been from the get go.

I beg to differ with you, if

I beg to differ with you, if this company or any other company releases private information as to the name, address, email address or any other personal information given them by a customer in the act of signing up or joining up without the written authorization of that person, it would certainly violate the federal laws of the privacy act. Sorry pal, I generally like your point of view, this one however, is incorrect.

Probably not. It's common

Probably not. It's common practice for companies to sell information that most of us would consider private. And you never know about it. Address, phone number, e-mail addys, and other stuff I can't remember right now.

Hmm you’re probably right,

Hmm you’re probably right, now that I think about it. I'm going to do a little research on this a little later to make myself smarter on the subject. I'm used to dealing with privacy issues in the medical arena. But as I have said and they have said, they will not release your info. And if as you say there is a law covering that then you also have that to back you or anyone else up, should an unauthorized release of info take place.

If I've ever offended

If I've ever offended anyone, my sincerest apology. I applaud your editorial policy and say not too soon. If you need any more info from me, please let me know, but I prefer my chat name in lieu of my real name.

For the record, I love DEL RIO LIVE/SWTEXAS LIVE! Thanks for the forum you provide.

Glad you guys told us this,

Glad you guys told us this, I was starting to wonder if I was seeing things. Posts here one minute and gone the next. I would also suggest that when a new poster registers, a box must be checked before account activation that states that the registrant indeed does understand and agrees to all policies. And now speaking of posting unsubtantiated rumors, does this mean that I can't start any more rumors about Joe really being a Longhorns fan? Where's the fun in that :)

Amor, It is my understanding

Amor,

It is my understanding that Joe holds Longhorn season tickets!

Any truth to that?

I believe you have just broken our editorial policy. This is what you would call a "fishing expedition".
